Chemical formula: Chemical formula of bleaching powder is Ca(OCl)2 .
Formation of bleaching powder : It formed by the reaction of chlorine gas on the calcium hydroxide. Chemical reaction of the chlorine gas and calcium hydroxide is given below.
2Ca(OH)2 +2Cl2 → Ca(OCl)2 + CaCl2 +2H2O
Uses of bleaching powder : (i) It is used for manufacturing of chloroform.
(ii) It is used as an oxidising agent in chemical industry.
(iii) It is used as a antimicrobial, it is used for freeing drinking water from micro-organisms.
(iv) It is used for bleaching clothes in laundry in cotton and textile industries.
(v) It is used for making non-shrinkable wool.
Properties of bleaching powder :
(i) It light yellow powder (commercial samples).
(ii) It is soluble in water.
(iii) It is basic in character.
Color : It is a white solid, but commercial samples appear yellow.
Smell : It smells like chlorine.
